Update! Curly on Toledo's Westwood Theater of the Fine Arts

Doc here with an update from The Glass City - Toledo, and the newly re-opened Westwood Theatre of the Fine Arts.

I will have much more to add about The Westwood in the next week or so, as I have been talking with the new owners of this great old art deco theatre.  Stay tuned.

So here he is... That excellent driver himself, our old friend Curly.

Doc,

Had the opportunity this evening to duck into the newly re-opened Westwood. The same friendly, young gal was attending the counter.

The theatre entrance door was partially blocked by a 2x6 board leaning on one side of the double-door and a sign saying to use the other side.  I asked about the theatre and she said it was open, $5 admission good for all day, but once you left the building no reentry.  Four feature videos running consecutively.  My time was limited, but for five bucks, I'd have a look and see for myself.  I noticed a fire inspection posting on the wall behind the counter stating the capacity was 442!

Up the steps, which appeared to be newly covered with treads, and into the theatre.  It was dead, with the couples corral still intact.  But wait, there was one couple seated in the row immediately in front of the Corral.  She had big, blond hair and was seated next to the right aisle.  Her escort was at her left flank.  I moseyed down the aisle and sat across the aisle and proceeded to watch the feature and glance at the couple.  They were watching the screen and not paying any attention to me.  Then a dude stood up from the front row and walked back the aisle between us and left the theatre.

I started looking around the theatre to see what changes I could detect.  The original chandeliers still were in place.  The walls and ceiling appeared to be repainted in a monotone tan???  An improvement from what I could see.  The carpeting in the aisle was replaced with the same dark, reddish brown color, but apparently new.  All the missing seats had apparently been replaced. A new projector box was setup in the front of the Corral and the picture quality on the big screen was much improved.   No other modifications were apparent.

Back to the couple - I kept trying to detect some sign from them.  They were not playing from what I could see and another dude sat down in the row behind me and offset.  The couple talked a little, but mostly faced the screen.  She seemed a little distant or bored, but what were they doing outside of the Corral, if they wanted to be by themselves?  Alas, my phone rang and it was time to go.  As I stood up, I made eye contact with her as I turned to leave.  If only I had more time.

As I left, I noticed that I could see into the balcony area, but it was still blocked off with a plywood wall.  I asked about the balcony and learned that construction is continuing and the balcony is still planned to be opened.  Stay tuned ... or get yourself there for the reopening!
