In the golden era of  adult theaters (mid-1970's through the late 1980's), the number of people (singles and couples) attending adult theaters on weekend evenings was significant.  I personally remember walking into The Bexley Twin in Columbus, OH on a early summer evening in 1984 and seeing easily 100-150 people inside. 

The Bexley did not show movies continuously, so in between adult movies the lights would come up and you could take a break.  Sure, these intermissions only lasted 10 minutes max, but it showed theater goers that everyday people like you and I were there to watch the latest John Holmes/Annete Haven/Marilyn Chambers feature.  Was there playing inside the theater?  Very little from what I can remember...

If one of you, the good readers of The Journal, walked into an adult theater today and saw 150 people in attendance, your head would likely explode.  Now, did that 150 people mean that there was a Plato's Retreat kind of scene going on at The Bexley?  No. 

During these golden days, you played the numbers; If there were 20 couples in a theater, two or three might be playing. And who knows, one or two might even be playing with the gen pop.  Regular theater goers would try and figure out regular couple's schedules.  OK, it's Friday... Barb will show up at 11pm. Anything to guaranty a "sure thing".

Theater sex was by coincidence. The right couples at the right time with the right rule-abiding guys.

However, the times changed and with it, technology.

The number of adult theaters in the country is a small fraction of what it was in 1990.  This year alone has seen several close forever (like The Westwood in Toledo), and that number heads south every year. But in some respects, certain hubs of this thing of ours are seeing steady (if not growing) action.

How? Visits by appointment.

There are now 4 adult theaters that announce via their Yahoo Groups when a couple either has arrived, or is planning to visit the theater.  (I am sure there may be more out there, and if so, please let me know and I will add them to the list). Why is this important? This guarantees that there might be gen pop activity or private room fun (in theaters with such ability) for BOTH couples and/or the guys who love them. 

Craigslist is also an excellent source of advanced adult theater/ABS visits.  I gauge part of my adult theater power rankings on this index.  The more announcements, the more activity.  One review of Brent's Theater Tails Yahoo Group will show that he recaps CL announcements almost daily.  My good friend and colleague Major Voyeur does the same thing for the St. Louis area and it's three active adult theaters via his Twitter feed.

During weekdays & weekends (and when not on duty), I will relay the alerts via my Twitter (link on the right hand side) as "The Clicker".  It will look like this:

A newer trend showing up are couples announcing via those same Yahoo Groups when they plan on coming, and some going the extra mile in telling us what they want when they get there.  Sure, the thrill of the chase is diminished greatly, but c'mon. This is the sure thing we were all whining about in 1988.  It's here via social media, and it should be embraced. 

The Good Doctor has jumped into the fray with the new "Previews of Coming Attractions" section at The Journal.  For couples looking for a major turnout at a couples friendly adult theater/ABS, this would be a good tool to utilize.  So far, the advanced announcements have created past good turnouts at CTs in Gary and The New Art in Hartford.  Coming in the next 7-10 days are visits again at CTs, 15th Ave in Melrose Park, and Secrets in Oakland, CA.  The venue here at The Journal allows me to post pics and video of the ladies/couples who plan on attending to a large audience. 

In closing (jeesh, this Sicilian is long-winded), yes, the golden days of adult theaters are gone.  However, what we have now is a different era. An era of theater sex by appointment (or even announcement).  And if you find yourself in an area that still has an adult theater scene, you might just forget (for a bit at least), the golden days of coincidence.
